These 19 articles (seven in English, the others in German) emerged from the eponymous 2004 conference at the Freie Universität Berlin. Exploring the ways the Gutenberg Revolution transformed the organization of textual knowledge, Enenkel (neo-Latin literature, Leiden U., Germany) and Neuber (German literature, Free U. Berlin, Germany) compile essays examining intersections between formal textual features and their genres, content, and intended functions. A sampling of topics: tacit skills in the perspective treatise of the late Renaissance, the relationship between word and image in books on medicine in the eary modern period, and cognition in emblematic fable books--Aegidius Sadeler's Theatrum Morun (1608) and its reception in France. The volume includes b&w drawings and paintings from the early modern period, along with reproductions of original pages from printed books and manuscripts.
