Reid (law, U. of St. Thomas, Minnesota) is an ecclesiastical judge with the Catholic Diocese of Scranton. Here he draws on his study of history to look at marriage during the Middle Ages. He finds an institution very different from the conception of a bond formed by and maintained by romantic love, one that explicitly enumerated rights and duties of both parties, and did not presuppose the kind of individualism taken for granted in modern secular society.
