Herren (emeritus, classics, York U.) presents a new edition and translation of an eighth-century satire on just about everything, written anonymously by someone claiming to be St. Jerome (who is thereby lampooned as well). Among matters the work satirizes are flat-earth cosmology, literal interpretation of the scriptures, censorship of heathen fables, human gullibility, Alexander the Great's courage, and Homer's account of the death of Achilles. The text survived through the Middle Ages in 44 manuscripts; this is only the third modern edition, and the first translation into a modern language.
