Hunting and Gleason (environmental and occupational health, and public health and health services, George Washington U.) compile 21 cases based on real events and problems written by US and Canadian public health faculty, graduate students, and practitioners. The cases illustrate to students how professionals in different disciplines address public health challenges and develop competency in core areas. They are organized around the 10 essential public health services and the three Institute of Medicine core public health functions. The cases relate to assessment, including HIV screening; policy development, including increasing awareness of heart disease in women; and protecting and assuring the public's health, with cases on cardiac rehabilitation for the elderly, and measuring the effectiveness of food safety programs.
