Opening Doors in Vancouver's East End

First published in 1979 as a double issue of the journal Sound Heritage, this volume collects 50 oral histories about the historic Strathcona district of East Vancouver, Canada. The interviews are with immigrants from various ethnic minorities who describe their community and lives and how they assimilated and achieved economic survival, social acceptance, and political and legal equality, as well as changed policies about urban renewal. Historical b&w photos are included. This edition has a new foreword by historian and heritage activist James C. Johnstone. Marlatt, a teacher, editor, novelist, and poet, and Itter, a sculptor and author, were residents of the neighborhood at the time. There is no index. Distributed in the US by Partners West.
