The 12 papers of this collection were first presented in August 1999 at an international seminar held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Department of Classical Archaeology at the U. of Aarhus, Denmark. The papers present recent research on the use, location, identity, and social aspects of ancestor busts and their cult in ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. Individual topics include the possibility of images of ancestors at the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, family tombs of the Etruscans, whether women were honored as ancestors in ancient Rome, and funerary statuary among the non- elite Romans.
