Following an introduction to the dimensions of health in a public health context, Simons-Morton (Prevention Research Branch, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD) and coauthors in the field present a summary of the social psychology perspective, models and theories of motivation and behavior, and applications of these theories in community-based health interventions. In addition to cognitive, operant, and social theories, they cover the theory of the diffusion of innovations, in this case: new health- related behaviors.
