This volume investigates comparative issues of dyslexia identification and manifestations between Asian languages with nonalphabetic orthographies, such as Chinese or Japanese, and alphabetic languages with varied orthographic depth (i.e. the degree to which a language deviates in sound-symbol correspondence). The editors (of the US National Institutes of Health, National Taiwan Normal U., and Taiwan's Academia Sinica) present 18 papers, organized into sections concerned with variations across orthographies; brain studies across orthographies; modeling dyslexia across languages; genetics and neurobiology; and bilingualism, cognition, reading, and intervention.
