Midwives Kenworthy and Kirkham (Sheffield Hallam U., UK) explore the effects of stillbirth and neonatal deaths on the personal and professional lives of midwifery professionals. They draw from interviews with 12 midwives in 2002 about stillbirths, as well as a 2009 study in which 15 midwives were interviewed about birth outcomes where a baby died around term. They begin with background on death, bereavement and grief, loss, and the impact of death on healthcare professionals, then discuss the midwives' experiences and coping with stillbirth; their perceptions of death; intuition and other signs of the death; the professional pressures of caring for a woman with a stillbirth, including how they learned from colleagues, documentation and associated tasks, and the need for support from colleagues and parents; communicating with the mother; blame and guilt; and the need for closure.
