Alongside the Chilean Roberto Matta, Fernando de Szyszlo (Lima, 1925) is one of the most important influences in post-war Latin American art. Associated with the Parisian avant-garde, in the fifties De Szyszlo took part in significant exhibition projects including the Sao Paulo and Venice biennials.<BR>His oeuvre, represented in the most discerning collections, has drawn from the mythical legacy of pre-Columbian cultures without forsaking the abstract language of the historical avant-garde, of which he has proven to be a devoted follower.<BR>This monograph, which comprises an extensive essay by Dore Ashton, and is illustrated with more than 200 color plates, presents a comprehensive survey on Szyszlo's career.
