<p>Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) was the founder of the phenomenological movement. Emphasising the strong connection between Husserl's phenomenology and the empirical sciences and mathematics, the essays in <I>Husserl and the Sciences</I> are grouped around this relationship according to the following themes: epistemology, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of physics, and the broader context of Husserl's philosophy in relation to social science. One of the main conclusions, reached in various ways by the contributors, is that the philosophy of Husserl is a much broader system of thinking than had been previously assumed. It helps to read Husserl in his own right as a thinker who was much more than simply the father of the 'phenomenological movement.' Husserl's relationships to major figures of the western philosophical tradition as well as mathematicians such as David Hilbert, Hermann Weyl, and Kurt Gödel are also examined.</p>
