In the 1996 edition by Allan & Scheidt, the empirical evidence on the mind-coronary heart disease (CHD) link could be summarized in one chapter. In his current overview of the field, Allan, a clinical cardiac psychologist, notes that the database on stress and cardiovascular disease has greatly expanded. He and Fisher (cardiology), both with Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, introduce 25 chapters by international specialists who review the pathophysiology of CHD, psychocardiac disorders, psychosocial risk factors (notably negative affectivity of the Type D--distressed--personality), assessment, and evidence-based recommendations for prevention and treatment including social support, transcendental meditation, and exercise.
