Developed from research associated with a symposium entitled "Torture and the Human Body" held at Whitman College, Washington, in February, 2009, this collection of eight essays examines the relationships between the physical and the political in the context of American torture of prisoners against the backdrop of the war on terror. Topics discussed include torture, democracy and the human body, accountability and the events at Abu Ghraib, force-feeding at Guantanamo Bay, and the torture of Omar Khadr. Contributors are academics in political science, philosophy and related fields from several universities, many of whom are associated with Whitman College.
