For three decades Indonesian president Suharto kept a veil well cast over the circumstances of his accession to power, but when he resigned in 1998, journalist turned author Dake began the research that had been forbidden until then into the 30 September Movement, the role of the Indonesian Communist Party and other groups and indeed governments in it, and what exactly happened to its non-communist leaders. His account was first published in Jakarta in November 2005, and has elicited the expected praise and condemnation.
