Presents memoirs of a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve officer who fought in WWII. He commanded a group of anti-submarine trawlers, a corvette, a succession of destroyers, and eventually an escort group. He spent the majority of his time in the North Atlantic participating in the longest battle of WWII, the campaign to protect Allied merchant shipping from all forms of German and Italian attack. While his account is a rarity, as few escort commanders published accounts of their experiences, most material was recollected 10 years after the events, with no access to official documents.
