Through this study, Jorda (English studies, Universitat Jaume I, Castelló, Spain) attempts to create a bridge between two applied linguistics subfields--interlanguage pragmatics and third language acquisition studies. Following discussion of the theoretical issues--third language acquisition, pragmatic competence and foreign language learning, the sociolinguistic aspects of language learning and use in the Valencian community--the author presents findings from a study of 160 female students at Universitat Jaume I conducted in 2000, analyzing the role of pragmatic instruction on pragmatic competence, the effects of proficiency level and task on pragmatic production, and the role of bilingualism in pragmatic awareness.
