As good communication between patient and doctors has been linked in a number of studies to positive health outcomes, it made sense to hold a workshop that discussed ways in which patients could become effective self-advocates. The resulting volume is not a collection of papers, but an integrated summary of both the presented information and the discussions that ensued between patients and medical professionals.
