Crane (history, Sam Houston State U.) offers an environmental and human history of the Elwha River on the Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington from the perspective of federal legislation in 1992 requiring the removal of two dams from the river to restore salmon runs. In doing so, he also addresses the long-running debate regarding development and ecological preservation, as well as the beginnings of the river restoration movement of the late 20th century.
