Always a magnet for larger than life individuals, Peking attracted characters as diverse as Wallis Simpson, Pearl Buck, J.D. Rockfeller, Jr., Bertrand Russell, Pierre Loti, Rabrindranath Tagore, Sven Hedin, Peter Fleming, and Cecil Lewis.
