The US Department of Defense provides military surgeons with a handbook on the treatment of forward combat trauma that covers battle and nonbattle injuries not usually encountered in a traditional civilian setting. Chapters address areas such as weapons effects and parachute injuries, levels of medical care, aeromedical evacuation, airway/breathing, injuries of various body parts, biological warfare agents, amputations, and pediatric care. This edition adds new material that updates the management of war wounds and 150 illustrations that are featured more prominently. All material has been rewritten by new authors in various subspecialties and edited by combat surgeons who recently did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Substantial updates have been made to chapters on anesthesia, shock and resuscitation, infections, damage control surgery, extremity fractures, and abdominal, burn, face and neck, and head injuries. The chapter on triage incorporates combat stress casualties, and material from a Department of Defense Task Force on detainee medical care has been adapted for the chapter on the care of enemy prisoners. The text uses an outline, bulleted format and emphasizes surgery performed at levels II and III. It is also available online and in CD-ROM form.
