Riskin, a New Mexico-based architect with a special interest in historic preservation, authored a 1996 government study of railroad depots in which she outlined plans for adaptive reuse of many of the structures featured in this book. Here she offers a brief history of railroad development in New Mexico, an overview of how railroads work, and descriptive treatment of each of the state's railroad buildings. The text is supported with small b&w photos of the structures, a glossary, a catalog of structures, listings for heritage tourism and of railroad-related museums, and a bibliography.
