Rather than studying sexuality in Africa from a public health/AIDS or a social construction perspective, Spronk (sociology and anthropology, U. of Amsterdam) extends discursive analysis by exploring the complexities of personal, inter subjective, and social dimensions of sex and romantic love. From interviews with young "hip and ambitious" Kenyan female and male professionals, she provides insights on their gendered sense of self and sexual relations in the contexts of cultural heritage and change. While the subject of female circumcision is not a major theme, a male interviewee who first defended the practice later said that he would not marry a circumcised woman because he wants an equal relationship.
