Most of the literature on slavery during the first 60 years in the colony that is now South Africa, is Dutch or Afrikaans, says Schoeman, and his purpose with this volume is to translate that material and collate it into a coherent narrative for English readers. A prominent novelist and historian in South Africa, he draws on published primary and secondary sources that he used for his 2001 Afrikaans book on the same subject, though he says the treatment is very different.
