Cook, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the U. of Colorado, outlines a research-based group therapy program used in the Intensive Family Therapy Program at the U. of Colorado and the children's hospital (Parenting Approaches for Challenging Kids and Mastery of Psychosocial Skills) for school and clinical counselors and psychologists, therapists, special educators, psychiatrists, and pediatric providers working with children ages seven to 13 (and their parents) who have emotional and behavioral difficulties such as disruptive, defiant, defensive, and dysregulated behavior problems caused by ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. It contains 22 adaptable modules (10 for children, 10 for parents) for routine and intensive outpatient settings, which teach children positive social skills and emotional regulation and show parents who to respond to difficult behaviors. It addresses aspects like resiliency, temperament, relaxation training, empathy, communication and cooperation, cognitive distortions, listening, anger, feelings, conflict resolution, bullies, making friends, and problem solving. The CD-ROM contains printable worksheets, therapist tools like progress note templates, quizzes, sample scenarios, and handouts. Additional mental health specialists contributed to some chapters.
