Where else can you talk to the people who actually made the cheese you are buying? Or pick out your dinner fish from a tank? Or take home celery with the morning dew still on it? Not Covent Garden or Les Halles, neither of which has survived as they were intended. Seattle's Pike Place Public Market is still going strong, and for good reason. It cascades down a bluff facing Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, it is neatly sorted although not always logical, and if you want it, experts will fling a big fish in a graceful arc over your head. Consultant Shorett (working on behalf of the late great reporter Morgan) updates the 1982 edition, including the efforts by some to "improve" the market, and provides a wealth of period and contemporary illustrations.
