The answer to this question posed by social scientists at Loyala University New Orleans is that we do not always know where to look for or recognize violence when we see it. Treating violence as a broad concept, 22 analyses and empirical studies address areas including the social/media construction of gendered violence and urban violence; emergence of "corrosive communities" and human rights violations in natural disasters (e.g., Hurricane Katrina); Homeland Security responses to terrorism; subculture glorification of violence; racial discrimination in relation to the death penalty; corporate violence against the environment; and pedophilia in the Catholic Church.
