Drawing on interviews she conducted with leaders of different organizations within the popular and Mayan movement in 1995, Stern (peace and development studies, Göteborg, Sweden) explores the notions of danger and harm that were meaningful to and constituted the lives of many Mayan women in Guatemala at the end of 30 years of armed conflict. In particular, she considers how narrators pinned down their identities in order to achieve security in a context riddled with different yet related forms of violence.
