For health care practitioners and students, Bickenbach et al., who are associated with the ICF Research Branch and were involved in the development and validation of ICF Core Sets, outline the Core Sets of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). They focus on the description of functioning for which standardization is important for consistent clinical practice and comparable health outcomes, and show professionals how to apply ICF Core Sets in their clinical practice to structure the clinical description and assessment of functioning in the context of rehabilitation. They introduce the concept of functioning as the lived experience of health, then outline the ICF and the processes and scope of the development of the Core Sets. They explain the principles that govern its use and a series of five use cases illustrating applications in different contexts: musculoskeletal conditions in acute care, spinal cord injury in post-acute care, and multiple sclerosis, vocational rehabilitation, and low back pain in long-term care.
