Mills (emeritus, oceanography, Dalhousie U., Nova Scotia) has added a new introduction reviewing both the science and the history of oceanography since his contribution appeared in 1989 (Cornell University Press). Otherwise, he lets his account stand, leaving others to tell the later story. He begins with the origin of biological oceanography in Germany and Scandinavia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, then traces the development of the field in Britain and the US from 1921 to 1960.
