Early in the seventeenth century a group of Basque children announced they were being kidnapped every night to attend witches' rites. The mountains quaked with fear as the faithful sought spiritual relief, and soon it came in the form of the Inquisition. Editor and Inquisition expert Henningsen and his contributors describe the grisly events that followed, including commentary on a large cache of original documentation unavailable to the scholarly community for decades. Contributors provide the context, including descriptions of the time and place, its culture, and the reasons for the epidemic of dreams that led to forced confessions. In the second section inquisitors, a local priest and his bishop pass reports and letters amongst themselves describing the events from the concerns of the priest about the children to the inevitable finale.
