Physicists Gilmore (Drexel U.) and Lefranc (U. des Sciences et Technologies, de Lille, France) look at chaos through the filter of topology, describing how to extract from chaotic data, topological signatures that determine the stretching and squeezing mechanisms that act on flows in phase space and that are responsible for generating chaotic data. Though much of the material has been little changed from the first edition a decade ago, they say, the first chapter has been substantially rewritten to make the whole book more accessible to people just entering the field, and new chapters have been added on bounding tori and representation theory for strange attractors.
