Fountas and Pinnell (Lesley U.) describe how to teach genre study through an inquiry-based approach within a readers' workshop in which students in grades K-8 read, make choices about what to read, and see reading as thinking. They focus on using picture books as mentor texts and the instructional contexts of interactive read-alouds, booktalks, minilessons, conferences, independent and guided reading, writing about reading, group share, and writers' workshops. They define the inquiry approach and describe the process of genre study, the foundations for understanding genre, how the readers' workshop and genre study can be integrated into language arts instruction, and strategies involved in reading comprehension. They then focus on the characteristics of fiction (realistic fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy) and nonfiction (narrative nonfiction, expository fiction, and biography), as well as hybrid texts, graphica, multigenre text sets, and poetry.
