The Dalton Trail, controlled by outdoorsman Jack Dalton during the Klondike gold rush era, was actually a trail created by the Native American Tlingit tribe. Dalton used violence to usurp control of the trail from Native Americans, then built bridges and way stations along the trail and charged travelers for their use. Gates, a resident of the Yukon for the past 40 years, tells the story of the now neglected trail, drawing on newspapers, books, maps, police records, and Klondike memoirs. Within the historical account are personal interludes describing the author's own adventures hiking, boating, and flying in the Yukon Territory in search of the trail. The book contains b&w maps.
