For speech-language pathologists, educators, and autism specialists, Tsiouri, a clinical psychologist and behavior therapist at the U. Hospital of Larisa, Greece, and Paul (speech-language pathology, Sacred Heart U.) explain the use of rapid motor imitation antecedent (RMIA) training as part of a larger intervention program for preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders who have severe language delays. The training teaches children to imitate a series of fairly easy behaviors in rapid succession, then imitate a word. They detail how to set the stage for training, conduct assessments, probe for motor imitation, build fluency of motor imitation, assess and use treatment for requests and labels, assess the child's ability to produce the word independently, and use the treatment in the context of communication intervention. A CD-ROM contains 11 demonstration videos of the training, appendices, and forms. Two additional speech-language pathologists contribute to some chapters.
