Salman (veterinary epidemiology, Colorado State U.) and Tarrés-Call, scientific officer of the FEED Unit of the European Food Safety Agency, compile seven chapters by parasitology, medical entomology, and veterinary and agrochemical specialists from Europe, who provide an overview of the geographical distribution of various tick species that cause animal diseases and zoonoses in Europe, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean basin. They draw on papers published from 2000 to 2010 to describe the factors behind the emergence of tick-borne diseases; the basic biology of 25 key tick species in the regions and their life cycles, geographical distributions, and significance as vectors, with photos; factors responsible for the spread and distribution of ticks, including climate, land use, and animal movement; tick-borne infections; the geographical distribution of tick-borne pathogens and the vector ticks; and the surveillance and control of ticks and tick-borne diseases, including sampling methods and control options for ixodids and argasids. Half of the volume is devoted to appendices containing tables of geographic distribution data for ticks and tick-borne diseases and identification keys for genera and species of ticks in the Mediterranean basin.
