With media representations of resistance to the US-led occupation of Iraq conflating disparate groups under the broad label of "insurgents," note Al-Ali (gender studies, U. of London, England) and Al-Najjar (a doctoral candidate in American studies and ethnicity at the U. of Southern California, US), there has been little analysis of the actual political and armed resistance to the occupation, much less the everyday forms of resistance that do not involved violence. It is to this last form of resistance as it manifests in art and activism that this collection turns. Produced entirely by Iraqis, this volume brings together a range of materials highlighting how Iraqis of have used art and activism to respond to the trauma of the American invasion and the violence of the occupation, from straightforward descriptive essays to examples of poetry and art.
