The first part considers the principles of developmental physiology and the pathophysiology of neonatal shock, the auto-regulation of vital and nonvital organ blood flow, and the controversies surrounding the definition of normal blood pressure in neonates, as well as the use of functional echocardiography, near-infrared spectroscopy, and advanced magnetic resonance imaging. The second part addresses embryonic and fetal heart development, fetal diagnosis and management, the role of fetal cardiology in the prenatal and postnatal management of congenital heart disease, and recent therapeutic and imaging advances.
