Wilson, a school-based coach and mentor who teaches at Lehman College, City U. of New York, describes her implementation of the Serious Comix project, a student-centered program which used technology to teach middle school students with special needs in New York City about digital and traditional literacy skills. The students used reading, writing, and visual design processes to create a digital comic book over a period of six weeks. She discusses comics, literacy, technology as an instructional tool, and technology standards for teachers and students, then explains how she designed the learning environment, how she helped students take ownership of their learning, and how they created the comics, ending with six lesson plans.
