A number of studies have shown that a healthy ecosystem helps reduce the affects of climate change and disasters. The authors here advocate for ecosystem-based adaptation because the ecosystems and their services are essential in climate change and disaster risk reduction fields, and that for those reasons its monitoring and regulation need to be connected to a governance and institutional program or service and pursued actively. Some specific topics include: an overview of ecosystem-based adaptation, cooperative management of ecosystems, the watershed approach to ecosystem management, valuing ecosystem services, and more.
