This study from the Anchor Institution Task Force profiles ten urban colleges and universities that demonstrate how institutions can support communities through development initiatives and partnership programs. The book begins with a brief history of universities, community partnerships, and economic development, then outlines a typology of three different strategies of anchor-based community development, based on the role of the university as a facilitator supporting partnerships in many different neighborhoods, as a leader in developing adjacent low-income neighborhoods, and as a convener acting with a broader coalition. The book includes case studies from universities around the country and sums up best practices for becoming an anchor institution. There is also practical guidance on building internal constituencies for partnership work and creating policy support for the Anchor Institution mission.
