This is volume of essays is a companion text for academic study of film and religion. The essays do not presuppose a particular religious background or promote certain beliefs or practices. They are organized into four parts following an editorial introduction by Blizek (religious studies, U. of Nebraska). The first part surveys several accounts of the intersecting interests between religion and film studies: using religion to interpret movies, using movies to critique religion, the retelling of religious stories, religion and world cinema, theology and film, women and religion in film, and more. The next two parts are more topical, focusing on specific religions in film. The religions considered are mostly world religions, though a couple of the essays explore indigenous religious representations. Themes in the third section include Jesus and Bible movies, redemption, karma, salvation, evil, Satan, eschatology, among others. The final section is a resource guide with an alphabetical (though not thematic) film-index and an extensive bibliography. The contributors include professors of religious studies, theology, and philosophy from American and European schools, as well as a pastor. This is a paperback reprint of the 2009 edition.
