Gribou, now a retired chemist, was expelled from third grade for being a Jew during the Nazi era; yet somehow, he managed to survive the war by leading a double life, complete with fake identity papers, a job with Nazi scientists, and a marriage to a local woman who did not know his real identity. Secretly, he was also active in the Polish Underground. After the war, he moved to Canada, where years of "living a lie" eventually took an emotional toll. His memoir begins in childhood, when he hears the voice of Jesus from a statue, and ends with a return to his childhood neighborhood to find that statue, deal with his survivor's guilt, and reconnect with remaining family.
