The goal of this work by Scott (sociology, Plymouth U., England) is to make clear and accessible the frequently obscure and complex world of contemporary sociological theory. He introduces the subject by discussing the foundational statements of sociological theory and the later contributions of Talcott Parsons (1902-1979), whose "reformulation of the classical heritage . . . dominated theoretical discussion for the best part of half a century." He then offers chapters on structure, function, and system; rational choice and social exchange; symbolic interaction and social constructs; conflict and collective agency; the contributions of Jürgen Habermas (b. 1929); deep structures and causal mechanisms; collective representations and cultural codes; linking structure and agency and the work of Anthony Giddens (b. 1938); and modernity and post modernity.
