Author John Wyatt (1925-2006) became enchanted with the Lake District as a child. At age 18 he left his job at the Daily Telegraph and became a forestry worker in a Lakeland wood. After serving in WWII, he took a correspondence course in writing and later returned to the Lake District, working as a regional organizer and as the first warden of the Lake District National Park. Here, he describes his experiences living alone in a woodland hut in the region, his only companion a baby deer he nurses back to health. The book was first published in 1973.
