Influenced by the Marxist explanatory frameworks of Antonio Gramsci and Georg Lukacs, this 1970 work explains the lack of a homegrown socialism within the Australian Labor Party by examining the evolution of a false class consciousness amongst Australian working people, beginning with the experiences of the first settlers. He locates the development of this false consciousness in racial panics directed towards Asian neighbors and indigenous populations and ideology of individual advancement rooted in the settlement patterns of Australian immigration. This edition includes a 1986 afterword, revised to take into account current trends of globalization, in which the original argument is rejected in favor of an explanation based on the disruptions caused by monopolizing capital in the sense of Lenin's formulation of imperialism.
