Miranda, an enrolled member of the Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation of California, has written two books of poetry and teaches English at Washington and Lee University. Here, she offers something for everyone: a personal and family memoir for general readers, a tribal history of California Indians for students and scholars, and poems for fans of her poetry. Miranda describes the violence and neglect she and her brother suffered growing up and ties it to the violence inflicted on Indians by missionaries in the region generations ago. Presented in a nonlinear style, the book presents the author's responses to primary documents including oral histories, newspaper articles, anthropologist's notes, and other sources.
