At the request of the Environmental Protection Agency in 2011, the National Research Council commissioned a Committee on Science for EPA's Future. It assessed the overall capabilities of the agency to develop, obtain, and use available scientific and technological information to meet future challenges and opportunities. This report addresses major changes in the biophysical and societal environment, including risk assessment, and management, computational techniques and bioinformatics, data mining and assimilation, crowd sourcing, benefit-cost analyses of environmental regulations, developments in public health, and organizational collaborations, and evaluates major drivers for environmental change and challenges in the future, such as chemical exposures, human health, and the environment, air pollution and climate change, water quality, and shifting spatial and temporal scales. It discusses emerging tools and technologies for those challenges and outlines principles for building environmental protection while enhancing the EPA's science leadership and capacity.
