Drawing on her own experience teaching in multilingual secondary schools and higher education in South Africa, as well as on research, Van der Walt examines bilingual and multilingual higher education students and lecturers and the practices they develop when they take the liberty of using the languages they have at their disposal to make sense of academic discourse. Her goal is to inform classroom practice rather than guide institutional policies. She covers the special place of higher education, official and unofficial linguistic diversity in higher education, managing the consequences of English-plus multilingualism, multilingual pedagogy in higher education classrooms, and from mono to multi thinking about higher education.
