Aimed at scientists and policy makers, this summary reports on an April 2011 workshop held by the National Research Council's Committee on Status and Participation of Women in STEM Disciplines and Careers in Washington DC, considering how different social, political, and economic mechanisms impact women's participation in science globally. The workshop identified strategies, core data, and guidelines for implementing policies and procedures to increase participation and advancement in chemistry, computer science, math, and statistics. Three panels addressed cross-cultural issues like socio-historical trends, higher education, and workforce segregation; the status of women in higher education and the workforce in the disciplines in various countries; and cross-cutting themes, including the role of disciplinary societies, example programs, and policies to enhance participation.
