Lanzinger, a pioneer in the field of video games who worked on classic arcade games such as Crystal Castles and Ms. Pac Man, shows the reader how to use modern open source tools to easily reproduce the classic games that defined the genre in the 1970s and 1980s. The author talks the reader through the creation of a series of classic style games such as Pac Man, Pong, and Space Invaders using Blender, Audacity, Unity, and Gimp to create 3D content, sound effects and music, 2D images and textures, and game logic and GUIs, respectively. All of these tools are freely available for the Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems with the exception of Unity, which can only be run under emulation on Linux. No experience in art, music, or programming is expected of the reader though there is an appendix that covers basic programming concepts using the JavaScript language.
